Announcement Types

Last Updated: Nov 01, 2013 03:38PM EDT

Organizations may wish to create different types of Announcements to support different business needs. An Announcement feed dedicated only to new events, or only to announce press releases, are common uses of the Announcements functionality.

The establishment of a new Community will establish a Announcements in support of that Community. A Parameter based on the Community Key will narrow any display of announcements using the ws:Announcements User Control. Similarly, a Parameter to establish a unique Announcement Type will create or display a unique Announcement Type that is not connected to a community.

Create a new, unique Announcement Type through the following steps:

  1. Create a new Content Item.  This can be on a new page or on any existing page.
  2. Establish the Content Item to serve Announcements. Name the Content Item as you wish, then scroll to page bottom. Click the User Control radio button for Content Item Type, and add ws:Announcements to the User Control class or path field.
  3. Add a Parameter to establish a unique Announcement Type. In the User Control Parameter field, add the Parameter AnnouncementType="XYZ". Change the XYZ to any string of letters or numbers with no spaces.
  4. Click "Save".

This will narrow the Announcements User Control created to only display the Announcement Type specified. Such Content Items can display the same Announcements on as many webpages as is desired.

Note: In many cases an Admin will want the primary display of a new Announcement Type to only show a limited number of Announcements and truncated Announcement text. In these cases the Admin should allow the user to access a separate full Announcements list without truncated text on a separate webpage. Accomplish this by creating a page for a complete Announcements list and duplicating the steps above for a Content Item there. Then use the Parameters listed under Additional Configuration Options to ensure the "More" and "Read More" links on the primary Content Item refer to the complete Announcements page correctly. If you are not sure what to do, look at the initial Announcements configuration established by Higher Logic staff.
