Search Cloud

Last Updated: Jan 03, 2014 01:40PM EST

Search Cloud presents page visitors with a “cloud” of terms that have been used in recent searches. Terms used more often appear larger. Clicking on the words in the cloud will provide the user with a search dedicated to that term.

Why

Search Cloud promotes content to users and lets site visitors know, at a single glance, what other members/users are most interested in.

Search Cloud is one of the fastest ways to give all visitors the most recent “scoop” and provide immediate access to the relevant available content.

Where it Helps

Search Cloud is a good addition to any home page, especially used in proximity to a Basic Search or Advanced Search Content Item.

Installation: Step By Step

Search Cloud is in release and can be installed by Admins using the instructions below. It is often installed prior to site release for new clients. Note: Search Cloud utilizes a separate Content item from Search.

  1. Create a Content Item for Search Cloud (from the Navigation Page
Select the Page Folder for the page where you want to install Search Cloud (the title will be in a light-blue box). On the right-hand side, under “Content” click “New”. This will create a Content Item and open its Enter/Edit Content Page. You may also re-dedicate an existing Content Item for Search Cloud.
  2. Name the Content Item
Fill in the top field for the name of the Content Item.
  3. Change the Content Item to Type User Control
Scroll to the bottom of the Enter/Edit Content Page. Above the HTML Editor are five radio buttons. Select the radio button for “User Control”. The HTML Editor will disappear.
  4. Input the User Control
Two fields will replace the HTML Editor. The top one is labeled “User Control class or path”. In this field, input HLCommon:SearchCloud.
  5. Click Save

Popular Parameters

Admins can modify the Search Cloud Functionality by adding the following to the User Control Parameters field.

Parameter Input Required Impact and Example
DaysBack Number Establishes the period for search terms appearing in the cloud. Example: DaysBack=”10” will allow only those terms searched in the previous 10 days to appear in the cloud. The default is 60.
NumberToShow Number Establishes how many terms will appear in the cloud. Example: NumbertoShow="10" will show only the ten most searched terms in the cloud. The default is 20.
SearchPageCode Page Code Establishes the search page that will be used to perform the search. Example: if the site’s Library search page has the page code “LibrarySearch” SearchPageCode=”LibrarySearch” will perform the search through the Library Search page. The default is Search.
Width Number
(with "px" or "%"
Establishes the width of the Search Cloud. Example: Width=”200px” will set the width of the cloud to 200 pixels. Note: this will not impact any headers, which will render to the full width of the Content Item as defined by Page Layout. The default is 100%.

Points to Consider

  • Use Search Cloud to promote specific searches and products. Admins or others add terms to the cloud by searching for them. Admins wishing to promote a recently published paper, for example, simply search for it a few times to ensure it shows in the cloud. Search a few more times for its font size to reflect multiple searches.
  • Search Cloud is visible to all but influenced only by members. Search Cloud terms are only populated by the searches of logged-in members. If searched often enough, searches of inappropriate terms will place those inappropriate terms in the cloud. Through a support ticket, Admins can determine the members who have conducted searches.
