You can manage some aspects of your mentoring program to control:
- how Mentors and Mentees are referred to in your community;
- the duration of mentoring relationships; and
- a threshold for the number of Mentees that a Mentor can have.
Access Mentoring Settings
- In the Admin Toolbar, click Admin.
- Navigate to Programs > Mentoring > Settings.
The Mentoring Settings page has two sections: Naming Conventions and Limits.
Naming Conventions
In this section, you can replace the default (singular and plural) names that are used to refer to Mentors and Mentees.
TIP: To accept the default values of these fields (Mentor, Mentors, Mentee, and Mentees), do nothing here.
NOTE: You can assign differing terms (for example, "mentee" vs "learner" vs "student"), but Higher Logic recommends keeping these simple and consistent.
- In the four fields, specify singular and plural forms of whatever words you want used in your mentoring program.
- Click Save (or scroll down to complete the Limits section).
Any changes will propagate across your community in about 10 minutes or so; go to an applicable page to confirm and review your settings.
Limits
Use this section to set any one of several mentoring-relationship "limits." These settings cannot be used in conjunction with one another.
Relationship length
You can set a default duration for mentoring relationships in either of two ways.
- Check the Limit length of mentoring relationship box to expand the section.
- Click the radio button for your preferred option.
- Click Save after setting.
Number of days
- Specify the number of days for the relationship to last.
- This field is not limited by a maximum value.
How this setting works
Mentors/Mentees can set their own preferred maximum lengths that are honored if this value is not set by a Super Admin. However...
- If this value is set by a Super Admin:
- this value overrides Mentors' and Mentees' preferred maximum lengths settings.
- a lower value (set by a Mentor/Mentee) will be honored because, as this is a "maximum" threshold, values lower than it are honored but values higher than it are not.
End date
- This field defaults to the <current_date>.
- Click the calendar icon to open the calendar and select an end date.
- If you manually specify a date, be sure to exactly match the field's date format.
How this setting works
Mentors/Mentees can set their own preferred end dates that are honored if this value is not set by a Super Admin. However...
- If this value is set by a Super Admin, this value will be honored.
Allowed number of Mentees
You can set a maximum threshold for the number of mentoring relationships a Mentor can have.
- Check the Limit number of Mentees a Mentor can have box to expand the section.
- Specify the maximum number of Mentees that your Mentors can be working with at any one time.
How this setting works
If a Mentor has set their own personal limit that is lower than this value, that number is honored because this is a "maximum" threshold.
