In many ways, tags are like behind-the-scenes organizers, helping to categorize your community's content and make it easier to find. For example, if 15 users tag their content with #2025conference, all 15 pieces of content can be viewed simply by clicking the tag. This helps your users easily locate content they find interesting, keeping engagement levels high.
This means that taking the time to properly plan and create your organization's formal tagging taxonomy, and continue to manage it over time, is a critical step in the community-management journey.
It is assumed you understand what tags are, the different types, and how they work. If not, check out our Tags article to learn more.
You know your community's goals and users best, so you're in the perfect position to manage your community's tags. However, this can be a time-consuming task, so Higher Logic provides an AI-powered feature called AI Suggested Tags to simplify the process by suggesting Formal tags based on your user-generated community content.
IMPORTANT: It remains up to you to accept the AI suggestions; meaning, you're still in control of your community's tagging taxonomy.
How does this feature work?
The AI Suggested Tags feature functions as a community assistant by doing much of the legwork for you:
- When enabled, it scans every thread and library entry in your community, looking for commonalities, repetition, and keywords.
- Based on the scan's results, it offers a list of tags for you to review.
- All you have to do is review the tags and then accept or reject them, based on what's appropriate for your community.
- Accepted tags automatically become Formal tags; rejected tags remain in the list but are grayed out and can no longer be interacted with. Rejected tags will never be suggested again.
Enable the feature & run the scan
Super Admins can enable this feature from the Admin interface. Once toggled on, the system will then automatically perform the scan to generate its Tag suggestions. Let's walk through the process.
- Access the Admin Interface.
- Navigate to Settings > Optional Features > AI Features.
- In the AI Formal Tag Suggestions area, click the toggle at the top right to turn on the feature.
- At this point, the scan begins to run. When it's complete, you will be sent an email letting you know your Tag suggestions are ready to review. Refer to the Manage your suggested tags section below for the next step.
Manage your suggested tags
Once the scan is complete, Super Admins can view the Tag suggestions from the AI Features page, via the ready for review link in the box.
On the resulting page, the AI tag suggestions are listed where Super Admins can accept or reject tags, individually or in bulk.
Accept & reject tags
To select tags, check their boxes on the left side of the list. A panel expands on the right showing how many tags you have selected.
TIP: You can bulk-select all tags on the current page via the checkbox above the list. You can also use the "Shift" (the "modifier" key on a Mac) and "Ctrl" keys to multi-select consecutive and non-consecutive tags.
- Click Accept to have these tags automatically become Formal tags and be added to the Tag Group, Other. Moving forward, you can manage these tags on the Settings > Tags and Mentions > Tags page (with your other Formal tags).
- Click Reject to remove these tags from the list; in addition, they will never be suggested again if another scan is run.
Understand list columns
This Admin page includes a total of five columns you can choose to show/hide, depending on the details you want to see about your suggested tags.
Click the X columns out of 5 dropdown below the list to control which columns display via their checkboxes.
The available columns are:
- Formal Tag Suggestion - Displays the AI-suggested tags based on your scanned community content.
-
User-Created Tag Exists - Indicates whether a user-created tag already exists. Knowing a user has already created a tag helps Admins understand the tag is likely relevant to their community and may also be a good candidate for a Formal tag.
- Suggestion Count - Shows the number of times the AI suggested a tag during the scanning process. This column is hidden, by default.
-
AI Rating - This rating is a direct reflection of the Suggestion Count, and expresses how confident the system is that a tag is relevant. Options are: Highest, High, Medium. For example, if three tags have a Suggestion Count of 8, 4, and 1, the AI Rating for them would likely be Highest, High, and Medium, respectively.
-
Status - Shows whether a tag has been accepted or rejected.
Browse multiple pages
If your community has a lot of user-generated content, the scan will likely produce dozens of tag suggestions, resulting in multiple pages for you to review.
- The number of total entries (tags) is shown at the bottom left.
- The default amount of tags displayed per page is 25. Click the dropdown to change this to 15, 25, 50, or 100.
- On the right side, use the page selector to jump to specific pages.
Tag search
Use the available search to quickly find a specific tag or groups of similar tags.
- Click the magnifying glass icon to expand the search field.
- Enter your partial or full search input. After a brief pause, the system will automatically return applicable results.
- To remove your search query and once again view the full list, delete your query or click the X.
