As you continue to create pages, and add content to them, you'll likely find yourself needing to perform tasks like re-organizing your navigation menu or re-arranging Content Items on a page.
How to Organize Your Pages
Before you learn how to organize your pages, you need to first understand how pages are organized in the CMS. The CMS lists pages by a site's three main Navigation Areas:
- The Main Button Bar represents a site's primary navigation menu. Adding/removing pages to/from the button bar is how to manage a site's main navigation options. Generally speaking, when creating a new page, you’ll do so under the Main Button Bar and configure it to appear directly in your site’s navigation menu or as a hidden page you’ll link to from elsewhere, like other pages, Discussion posts, emails, etc.
- Text Links at Top pages display as links in a site's banner (Contact Us and Code of Conduct are the default links).
- Text Links at Bottom pages display as links at the bottom of the page.

With that in mind, if you've ever worked in Windows Explorer, you'll be instantly familiar with the core concepts of the CMS:
- The Navigation area on the left shows all of a site's pages, each represented by a folder. Pages can be nested under one another to create a tiered structure, with top-level pages known as "parents" and sub-pages known as "children." In this example, I've expanded my site's Browse page (the parent) and its seven sub-pages (the children) are listed below. Five of these pages are active and two of them are hidden (indicated by their opaque folder), which means they're not shown in my site's navigation.
- Selecting a page displays its Content Items in the Content area on the right. As you can see below, a page can have multiple Content Items, and these represent the actual content currently rendering on a page (excluding any that are hidden). To the right of a Content Item is a number, indicating where it will render on the page. A preview of a page's overall content structure is shown in the grid to the right.
Just like in Windows Explorer, moving pages is accomplished by cutting and pasting them. To do so:
- Select the desired page, and then click Cut. Unlike Windows Explorer, though, there's no visual indication when cutting a page or content in the CMS; it simply prepares it to be moved to another location.
- Next, select the Navigation Area or page within an area where you want to move your page (pages are pasted directly below the selected area or page). I need to move my page to the end of my site's navigation menu, so I'll select Participate and click Paste (you can also click Paste as Child to nest the page under the selected one).
How to Organize Content on a Page
The foundation of page content organization is the Page Layout. There are over two dozen layouts you can apply to a page, allowing you to structure it into specific content areas; you can then add Content Items to each area to achieve the desired layout and design.
Step 1 - Apply a Page Layout
The first step to properly organizing content is applying a page layout that best accommodates it. To do so:
- Select the desired page, and then click Edit.
- Then, select the desired layout from the Page Layout menu. A preview of the chosen layout is shown in the grid to the right.
NOTE: Try different Page Layouts until you find one that best suites the page's content: The number of Content Items on a page, and their type, typically impact the Page Layout you should use.
Step 2 - Organize a Page's Content
The first thing you need to do is select the page to see it's associated content. As you can see, the page's layout grid is shown to the right, and each Content Item is numerically tagged to show its current placement on the page.
When organizing page content, there are two steps to consider:
Step 1 - Place Content
First, you need to place a Content Item in the desired content area. I recently added a new widget, but I want it to display in a different location on the page. Currently, it's sharing content area 2 with the Latest Discussions widget. Compare the two images below:
However, I want my widget to display on the right side of the Home page, so I need to move it to content area 3. To do this:
- I need to select my widget, and then click Edit.
- In the Page Layout Sections area, I'll select content area 3, and then, click Save at the bottom of the page.
Now, my widget displays on the right side of my Home page, below the Announcements widget, as you can see below.
The problem is I don't want it to display below my Announcements widget: I want it to display above it. That's where Step 2 comes in.
Step 2 - Order Content
To re-order my widget so it displays above the Announcements widget:
- I need to select the Announcements widget and click Cut.
- Now, I need to select my widget and click Paste so Announcements is moved below it (content is pasted below the selected item).
As you can see below, my widget now displays on the right side of my Home page, above the Announcements widget.
