According to the FTC's CAN-SPAM act, all commercial emails must contain an unsubscribe link to give recipients the option to remove themselves from additional mailings. If you do not follow these guidelines, stiff fees will result per violation. To help protect you from violating this law, our pre-built message templates all contain an unsubscribe link by default, and the system won't even allow you to create non-transactional messages if they don't contain an unsubscribe link, as shown below.
However, transactional messages do not require an unsubscribe link because they don't meet the act's criteria. So, what constitutes a transactional message and how do you ensure you understand the different so you don't violate the CAN-SPAM act? Click HERE to read detailed information on the FTC's website.
NOTE: We recommend replacing the unsubscribe footer in transactional templates to have descriptive text on why the recipient is receiving the message in case they do look for the unsubscribe link. This can help alleviate recipients marking the message as SPAM.
Create a Transactional Template
The steps below walk you through how to create transactional message templates your organization can use to send transactional messages:
- Navigate to the Messages tab.
- Click Message Assets in the left-hand panel, followed by Templates.
- On the resulting page, click Create New.
- In the resulting pop-up, fill out the fields as desired, but make sure to check the check the Transactional Template box to make this a transactional template.
- Click Create.
NOTE: You can switch templates between being transactional and non-transactional until a message uses the template; then, it is locked.
Use a Transactional Template
When creating a message, your transactional templates are not stored where your other custom templates are (i.e., in the Your Templates area). Instead, you'll find them in their own area: Transactional.
NOTE: If you'd like to limit access to transactional templates, see Template Permissions to learn how to set template permissions.
Send a Transactional Message
Before you'll be allowed to send a transactional message, you’ll be required to check a box indicating your compliance with CAN-SPAM.
Transactional messages will be sent to recipients who are:
- Unsubscribed from the message category
- Unsubscribed from all
- Auto-suppressed for inactivity
Transactional messages will not be sent to recipients with other unsubscribe and suppression types.
