As with standard messages, the first step when creating a transactional message is to create a template.
The difference with templates for transactional messages (versus standard message templates) is that there are no content areas in which you add stories. Transactional-message templates are much simpler by design because their intent is to convey, typically, very specific "transaction" information to the recipient.
NOTE: You cannot attach files (e.g., invoices or receipts) to these templates, they are text-only templates.
To learn how to create templates for transactional messages to which you want to add an attachment, see Transactional Messages - Attachment Template.
This article describes how to create a template for a transactional message and how to manage your transactional-message templates.
Create a transactional-message template
- Access the Admin interface.
- Navigate to Messages > Transactional > Message Template.
- Click Create Mailing Template.
- At the top of the design page, specify the template's properties:
- In the HTML Template section, add your message text to create your template.
-
- Use the fields in the upper part to add HTML Head tags and HTML Body tag parameters.
- Use the text-editor field to add your content, and then customize your content (e.g., format the text size, color, and font; add links, bullets, images, and personalizations) with the options in the toolbar.
- When your content is as you want it, click Create Text Template to generate a text template.
-
- If you want to change your content, do so only in the HTML field; then click Recreate Text Template to review the changes in the text version.
- Click Mailing Content Codes to open an overlay dialog that has helpful information.
- Click Create to finish and save your template.
Manage your transactional-message templates
Your transactional-message templates are stored in a central location and can be managed there.
To access and manage these templates:

On this page, you can:
- Hover on a template's icon to Modify, Copy, and Delete the template.
- Click a folder name to display its templates.
- Create a folder in which to store templates.
- Check the box to include your deleted templates (which you can "undelete") in the template list.
- Click to create a new template.
- Search for templates by name.
