Upon joining the Open Forum (and/or Staff Forum community if you're an admin), you'll be prompted to choose whether you want to receive notifications from its associated discussion. While you can opt-out altogether, choosing to receive notifications makes it easy to stay current on community activity and engage promptly to new discussion posts.
Discussion notification types
While joining a community enables you to participate in its discussions online, choosing a discussion notification subscription type enables you to both post and receive messages directly from your email without even having to log in. This makes it easy to stay up to date and participate in the conversations happening across the community.
You can choose one of three discussion notification types:
- No Email - You won't receive any notifications.
- Personalized Digest - A daily email summarizing all content relevant to your preferences, interests, and activity. Depending on your need to keep up with discussion content, digest notifications are a great choice for busy discussions to prevent your email from being flooded with dozens of messages on a daily basis.
- Personalized Digest & Real-Time Discussion Emails - In addition to receiving the Summary email at the end of the day, you'll also immediately be notified about new discussion threads/messages related to the Topics I follow tags you've set on your profile. Being that you'll receive a nearly instantaneous email each time someone posts to the discussion, this is a great option if it's important for you to reply promptly to questions and/or you simply want real-time insight into the conversations happening in a community.
NOTE: Choosing this option will exclude discussion activity from the Summary email so you’re not presented the same information twice.
Manage your notifications
While you're prompted to choose your discussion notification preference upon joining a community, you're free to manage it from your profile at any time.
From your profile, navigate to My Account > Community Notifications.
Let's look at each action you can perform on this page.
Set Topic Community notifications
If you joined your Open Forum community (termed a "Topic Community," you'll see an area to manage its notifications.
From the Email Delivery menu, you can update your notification preferences to one of three options:
- No Email - You won't receive any notifications.
- Personalized Digest - A daily email summarizing all content relevant to your preferences, interests, and activity.
- Personalized Digest & Real-Time Discussion Emails - In addition to receiving the Summary email at the end of the day, you'll also immediately be notified about new discussion threads/messages related to the Topics I follow tags you've set on your profile. NOTE: Choosing this option will exclude discussion activity from the Summary email so you’re not presented the same information twice.
Set override email addresses for your notifications
By default, all community and discussion notifications are sent to your account's primary email address (this is shown at the top of the page).
If desired, you can set an override email address for your discussion notifications. Just click the add override addresses link and follow the prompts in the resulting dialog.
When finished, your override(s) are listed in this area, as shown below.
- Click the pencil icon to edit your selection.
- Click the X icon to remove the override, meaning the associated notification emails will once again be sent to your account's primary address.
