- Details how the default single-click unsubscribe can lead to accidental unsubscribes and incorrect click metrics.
- Explains that enabling two-click unsubscribe prompts users for confirmation before proceeding, helping to prevent spam filters from automatically unsubscribing users.
- Notes that this feature must be enabled by Higher Logic.
By default, your account is set to use a one-click unsubscribe process. The optional two-click unsubscribe feature provides a safer and more user-friendly way for recipients (Contacts) to opt out of your email communications. Instead of unsubscribing with a single click, which can be triggered accidentally or by automated spam filters, the two-click process adds a confirmation page to prevent unintended unsubscribes.
NOTE: The two-click unsubscribe feature is available to all accounts but must be enabled by Higher Logic. If you'd like to use this feature, create a case and request it be enabled in your account.
Why is Two-Click Unsubscribe important?
- It prevents accidental unsubscribes: Many spam filters and email security tools automatically "follow" and load links in emails (including unsubscribe links) before the recipient sees the message. With traditional one-click unsubscribe, this could result in users being unknowingly removed from your lists.
- It protects data integrity: Requiring a confirmation action from the Contact ensures only real, intentional unsubscribe requests occur. This helps avoid erroneous unsubscribe metrics and improves compliance reporting.
- It enhances user experience: Contacts can more clearly understand what they're about to do, reducing confusion.
Use case
By default, Contacts can unsubscribe from messages with a single click: clicking the unsubscribe link in the footer of a message immediately unsubscribes them with no confirmation. In some cases, though, spam filters will attempt to visit the unsubscribe link before the recipient has a chance to view the message, resulting in two issues:
- Inadvertent unsubscribes
- Erroneous click metrics
With two-click unsubscribe enabled for your account, when a Contact clicks the unsubscribe link, they are presented with a confirmation of the action and, if confirmed, are unsubscribed.
Example
- A Contact receives a message and clicks the unsubscribe link.
- A confirmation page displays the unsubscribe details. The Contact must then click the Unsubscribe button to confirm the action. This additional step blocks spam filters from causing the issues mentioned previously.
