Higher Logic has introduced artificial intelligence (AI) functionality in order to improve, modernize, and enhance the search experience in your online community.
This functionality comes in the form of several AI features, some of which are "brand new" features and some of which are enhancements to features and functionality that you might already be familiar with.
AI features availability
All of the new AI functionality is enabled and managed per Higher Logic site. Within each site:
- each new AI feature is optional (per Super Admin discretion) and
- Super Admins can limit the availability of the features.
NOTE: As a result, some of the features and/or functionality that are described in this article might not be available to all community users.
This article documents the new AI features for the benefit of those community users for whom the features are available.
AI features overview
The following table offers a high-level view of the new AI features.
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| AI Assistant |
Location: Site wide via the sparkle
icon in the lower right of all community pages.
The "chat panel" that opens when the AI sparkle icon (or, optionally, your site's custom image) is clicked. You can ask AI Assistant for information on a community-related topic and it retrieves relevant information from sources within the community. Refer to AI Assistant, below, for information. |
| AI Search |
Location: After a search via the Search field
in the page-top navigation bar, this displays on the Search (results)
page above the search results.
AI Search has a search-input field (e.g., "Ask AI Assistant") in which you can get additional assistance via an ongoing chat. Refer to AI Search, below, for information. |
| AI Chat widget |
Location: Any community page on which an Admin
has added this widget.
This widget is driven by the AI Search Agent that an Admin has assigned to it. It displays to community users only if:

AI Assistant
AI Assistant is the community-integrated chat feature that you can use to more easily and more quickly get information and answers about community-related topics. It features an "ongoing chat" experience so that you can get more information and adapt your query as you chat.
NOTE: The chat is considered "ongoing" because: i) you can ask for additional information and even adjust the chat without having to "start over;" and ii) it remains accessible via the fly-in chat panel even if you close the panel and then reopen it.
IMPORTANT: AI Assistant queries the host site content only. It does not query external sites and sources on the web.
Usage notes & tips
- AI Assistant's query is sitewide.
- You can continue your chat as you move through the community because AI Assistant preserves the conversation across community pages, even if you close the panel and then reopen it. The chat is permanently lost, however, if you:
- click the Clear icon (described in the table below),
- are inactive for an hour, or
- clear the session cookies in your browser.
- If you clear the chat and then subsequently request information about the same topic, the results could be slightly different due to, for example, content being added since the prior search.
Possible customizations
To ensure a more personalized community experience, AI Assistant is designed to be customizable per community site. Some of the following aspects of AI Assistant might display differently or have different labels in your community than how they are documented in this article.
- The sparkle icon is the default image but it is customizable. If it has been customized in your community site, something other than the default icon might display.
- One of your site's Admins might have customized the name of AI Assistant. (For this article, we have renamed AI Assistant to Floyd.)
- Other elements (e.g., button labels and field "helper" text) are customizable per community site; these, too, might display differently or have different labels in your community site.
To access AI Assistant, click the sparkle icon (or your site's custom image) in the lower right of the browser window.

AI Search
AI Search is an enhancement to the existing search functionality in your community site.
After you have run a search, the AI Search widget automatically displays on the Search results page and is available with the AI Assistant chat feature to help you query the community — and optionally, its members — for additional information.
Post a Discussion Thread
If the summary and sources are not what you expected, or if you want additional information, you can click the "Request help" button to initiate a community Discussion thread.
TIP: This is also beneficial if your chat did not yield any results. By starting a Discussion thread, future queries on the same topic will, at a minimum, lead users to the Discussion where they can see that there was prior interest and which, by then, might have generated at least some information.
NOTE: Do not use this feature to provide feedback about your chat experience. Instead, use the feedback mechanism (the megaphone icon) that is provided directly below the results summary, which ensures that your feedback is correctly routed to be reviewed.
When you click the button, the Post a Discussion Thread overlay dialog displays with draft content that is based on your chat.
Review AI Assistant's draft content and:
- accept the suggested Community, Subject, and/or Discussion content, or
- replace any (or all) of these suggestions with your preferred content.
To replace any of the suggested content:
- Click the Post to Community dropdown to select a community in which to post.
- Specify an appropriate title for the discussion in the Discussion Subject field.
- Work in the editor field to make changes to any or all of the content.
- Use the options in the toolbar to format (bold, italic, bullets, links, tags, at-mentions) the content.
- Click the ellipsis icon (...) to access more formatting options.
- Click Post.
