In this article, we'll .
NOTE: Only widgets associated to our redesigned library are discussed in this article.
Access the widgets
You have to edit a page in order to access and manage (add, edit, remove) the widgets that it hosts.
To edit a page:
- Navigate to the page that you want to manage and click Edit Page on the Admin Toolbar (or right click for a new tab).
Alternatively, you can click Edit Navigation to access the CMS from which you can access any page.
- In Page Designer, click the Build tab and scroll down to the Widget section.
The section defaults to displaying All widgets.
- Click the Category dropdown and click Library to refine the view to just the Library widgets (these are discussed in this article).
Alternatively, you can type in the search field to quickly find one or more widgets.
NOTE: The search field queries the names of the widgets. If you type lib, seven of the eight Library widgets display; searching on "lib" does not return the Media Display widget.
Redesigned Library widget
This is the primary Library widget that powers the redesigned Library experience.
Library Entries
In a default community configuration, this widget is used on the Browse > Library Entries page and on the Library tab for individual communities.
This single widget powers Higher Logic's redesigned Library experience.
- If your organization uses our redesigned library, the Library Entries widget is used on the main "Library Entries" page, as well as the Library tab for individual communities.
- If your organization does not leverage our redesigned library interface, the Library Entry List widget is used instead. To learn more about updating to the redesigned library experience, see Upgrading to the Redesigned Library.
This widget displays a list of Library Entries in either a list or card view, toggleable via the View icons, and allows entries to be filtered by type and sorted in various ways. In addition, users can create entries and select an entry to view its details in the expanded Preview Panel, providing several management actions.
Example
Library Entry widgets
These widgets are used on the View Entry page that displays when users click to view an individual Library Entry.
NOTE: The easiest way to access the default View Entry page is to navigate to a Library, click to view an Entry, and then click Edit Page in the Admin Toolbar.
Reference the image to the widgets discussed below.
1 - Library Entry Actions
Inserts an Actions dropdown on a Library Entry page allowing users to perform several actions, such as:
- Viewing the Entry's permalink
- Editing the Entry (admin only)
- Pinning the Entry to the top of the Entry list (admin only)
- Deleting the Entry (admin only)
2 - Library Entry Statistics
Can display the following activity/statistics for a Library Entry:
- number of times favorited
- number of comments
- number of total views
- number of files
- number of times shared
- number of downloads
When configuring the widget, you can choose which statistics to display.
3 - Library Entry Details
Displays an Entry's description, if one has been provided.
4 - Library Entry Attachments
Displays a Library Entry's associated files.
You can configure a few options, such as setting the maximum number of files to show, sorting the files by name, and more.
Media Display widget
The Media Display widget allows you to embed video content from the selected Library Entry on any page across your site.
This functionality is useful for sharing important video content in several locations across your Higher Logic Community to ensure it's accessible to all users it may pertain to.
Other Library widgets
There are two other Library widgets: Create/Edit a Library Entry and Quick Library Entry Upload. These can be:
- added to any page across your site, and
- both of them allow users to upload files to a Library.
Create/Edit a Library Entry
This is the default widget that is used in your community when Create > Library Entry is chosen.
- It provides the full, step-by-step process to upload a file to a Library, as explained in Upload & Download Files.
- The upload process that is based on this widget allows users to provide more details about a file before uploading it.
Quick Library Entry Upload
The Quick Library Entry Upload widget offers a simplified upload experience that has fewer options and it limits the amount of detail that can be included about the file that is being uploaded.
If this widget is added to a page that is:
- within a community, the default behavior is to upload the Library Entry to that community's Library. (A different community can be selected, if preferred.)
- not associated to a community, you must specify which community Library to upload it to; otherwise, the widget will not function.
Files that are uploaded via this widget do not display in the widget. They are uploaded to the community where the widget is located or to the configured community. This widget simply serves as a vehicle to allow file uploads via a simple interface.
Example
Troubleshoot: Duplicate content across Library pages
If you encounter a situation in which unexpected library content displays on a library page, the cause might be in the configuration of the content widget on that page: namely, the content widgets on both pages are set to filter by the same library.
Understand the cause
The content widget on each library page controls which content displays on that page. If a widget's Library filter is not correctly configured, it could pull content from an unintended library.
EXAMPLE: The widgets on Page A and Page B display the same content: that of Library A instead of Page B displaying content from Library B.
Fix the Library selection
To fix a Library selection on the widget:
- Navigate to the page on which the content incorrectly displays.
- In the Admin Toolbar, click (or right click for a new tab) Edit Page.
- In Page Designer, locate the content widget that displays the library items and click it to select it.
- Click the widget's pencil (edit) icon.
- On the configuration panel, check the Library field and select the library that has the content that you want displayed on the current page.
EXAMPLE: From the earlier example, the widget on Page B should be set to Library B (not Library A).
- Click Save and, in the bottom-right of Page Designer, click Save and then click Publish.
- On the community page (e.g., Page B), verify that the widget now displays content from the expected library (e.g., Library B).
TIP: Repeat these steps for any other pages that display unexpected library content.
Best practices
You can prevent occurrences of duplicate content in these Library widgets if you:
- Always verify the Library settings when you add or edit a widget.
- Clearly label your libraries so that they're easier to correctly select when a widget is added or edited.
- Preview the new or edited widget on the page to ensure that it displays the expected content; immediately fix it if it displays the wrong content.
