Moving threads in your community site
It's not uncommon for users to post a discussion or a question where they think it is appropriate and for a Super Admin to prefer that the exchange be conducted elsewhere. To simplify this, Super Admins can move discussion threads and question threads to a different community.
Below are a few things that you should consider when moving threads.
Thread type notes
- The community that the thread is being moved to must have the relevant thread type enabled in order to be available as a target for the move. For example, to move a Q&A thread from Community ABC to Community JKL, Q&A threads must be enabled in Community JKL.
Communities notes
- Threads cannot be moved within a community. The tool supports only community-to-community moves.
- Threads can be moved into and out of hidden communities.
Threads notes
As a Super Admin, you:
- can simultaneously moving multiple threads (of one type only) to a different community.
- can move entire threads (i.e., a discussion/question and its associated replies/answers) only. That is:
- a discussion and its associated replies
- a question and its associated answers
- cannot move individual posts or questions or replies or answers that are within a thread.
Access the Move Threads page
To access the Move Threads page:
- In the Admin Toolbar, click Admin.
- Navigate to Community > Discussions > Move Threads.
You are on the Move Threads page.
The next section describes how to move one or more threads to a different community.
Move a thread
There are only a few steps in the move process.
NOTE: The Move button remains disabled until the required fields on the page are properly configured. Filter by date is the only optional field.
To move a thread:
- Click the Choose community with threads dropdown and select the community that contains the discussion or question thread you want to move. If the selected community has:
- only one thread type enabled, that type (Discussion Threads or Question Threads) auto-populates the Thread Type to move field.
- both thread types enabled, click the Thread Type to move dropdown and select the type of the thread (Discussion Threads or Question Threads) that you want to move.
- (Optional) Check the Filter by Date box to enable the Date Range field, and then click into the field.
NOTE: This is particularly helpful if the selected community has a lot of threads because it populates with threads "since inception" and could display an extremely long list.
- You can click the calendar icons to set dates for the From and To fields. Or...
- You can type the dates (the format shown is required: Oct 19, 2025) into the fields.
- Click Apply to set the date range.
- Click the Choose Thread(s) to move dropdown and select one or more threads; they display in the field as you select others. (Click the x next to a thread to remove that thread.)
- Click the Choose community to move to dropdown and select the community that you want as the new "host" of the thread.
- Click Move.
A confirmation message display at the top of the page.
Move Thread example
In the example below, an Admin feels that, in the current community, three user questions are being overlooked and that, in a more targeted community, the questions are more likely to be seen by users who can answer them.
The Admin decides to move the Question threads from the All Things Travel community to the Questions About Travel community.
