You can use Message Categories to group messages and social posts to track their performance and effectiveness. Admins can create Message Categories and choose which messages and social posts to include in them, and then view reports that compare and contrast the performance of your Message Categories.

Notes
- Enabling - If this feature is not enabled for your account, create a case.
- Assets - Message Categories are Enterprise "assets" in your account so they will follow any rules your account has configured for Enterprise Teams. To learn more about Enterprise assets, see Enterprise Asset Permissions.
- Permissions - An administrative user can limit who can manage Message Categories by assigning the Manage Message Categories permission to their login. Refer to Message Category permissions, below.
Access Messages Categories
To access your Message Categories:
- Access the Admin interface.
- Navigate to Messages > Assets > Message Categories.
- On the Manage Categories page, click a column header to sort by category name, message count, or creation date.
- Use the link in the upper right to view messages and posts that are not associated with any category. Refer to Un-associated messages and posts, below.
Create a Message Category
- Specify a name in the Create Category field and click Go.
The list refreshes and the new category displays in alphabetical order.
- Click the pencil icon to change the name.
- Click the X to delete the category.
- The list icon has no function until you populate the Message Category.
Edit a Message Category
- Click the pencil icon next to a Message Category to rename it.
- Specify the new name and click Go.
The renamed Message Category displays in alphabetical order.
Delete a Message Category
TIP: You cannot delete a Message Category that has associated messages or posts. Move them to a different category and then delete the category.
- Click the X next to a Message Category to delete it.
- Click Yes at the confirmation message.
The Message Category no longer displays in the list.
View a Category's messages and posts
- Click a message category's list icon.
A new page opens displaying any messages and posts associated with the Message Category.
TIP: On this page, you can click a pencil icon to open the Switch Category dialog and then move that message or post to a different category.
Show/hide Message Categories
To show or hide your Message Categories:
- Access the Admin interface.
- Navigate to Settings > Assets.
- In the upper part of the Asset Management page, click Hide/Show Assets.
- On the right, click the underlined asset chooser and select Message Category.
TIP: Use the Search field to refine large lists of Message Categories.
- Toggle the Viewing dropdown to display either your shown or hidden assets.
NOTE: The Show/Hide button to the left of the dropdown will change based on the dropdown selection.
- Check a box to change the settings for a Message Category and click the Show/Hide button above the list. The page will auto-refresh and update.
TIP: You can select multiple Message Categories.
The Message Category is now either hidden or shown. Navigate to Messages > Assets > Message Categories and review the list to ensure your setting was saved; hidden Message Categories will not display in the list.
Add a message to a Category
You can associate a (new) message with a Message Category while creating the message. To do so:
- On the Messages > List page, click the plus sign to the right of the page title to create a message.
- In the dialog, click choose category.
- In the next dialog, choose a category and click Select.
The new message will be associated with the Message Category.
Notes
- You cannot create a Message Category during this process. You can only choose from existing categories.
- If you want to associate an existing message with a different Message Category, refer to View a Category's messages and posts, above.
Un-associated messages and posts
In the upper right of the Manage Category page, you can use the Click to view messages not associated with any category link to see whether any of your email messages and posts are not associated with a Message Category.
This page has three dropdown lists of messages and posts (Twitter and Facebook). You can use these lists to add a message or a post to a Message Category.
To select and add a message or a post:
- Click one of the dropdowns to access the list.
TIP: Click the A-Z icon (before clicking Go) to toggle the alphabetical order of the View Messages in Category list.
- Select a message or post and click Go.
- In the dialog, select any one Message Category and click Go.
- Click a different radio button to select a different Message Category.
- Click Reset to clear your selection.
- Click Close to close the dialog without saving your selection.
- On the Manage Category page, check the Number of Messages column to verify that the message or post was added. You can also click the list icon to see the full list of messages and posts.
Message Category permissions
Administrators can assign the Manage Message Categories permission to users so that they can manage Message Categories.
To manage your permissions:
- Access the Admin interface.
- Navigate to Settings > Users.
- Select a user and click Permissions.
- In the dialog, click to expand Email > Message Management and check the box for Manage Message Categories.
- Click Save.
The selected user can now manage Message Categories.
Manage permissions via a profile
You can create a profile with multiple users and then simultaneously apply the Manage Message Categories permission to all of the users in the profile using the same procedure that is detailed above.
NOTE: Any users who are subsequently added to the profile automatically inherit the permission.

Message Category ownership and availability
Admins can change who owns a Message Category and set whether it is visible for their account.
WARNING: You can see only those Message Categories that you own and that belong to people on your Enterprise team. If you change a Message Category's owner to someone who is not on your team, you will no longer be able to see that Message Category.
To manage ownership and availability:
- Access the Admin interface.
- Navigate to Settings > Assets.

Change ownership
To change a Message Category owner:
- Under Change Asset Ownership, click Select asset and choose Message Category.
- Click Select Message Category and in the dialog, select one or more Message Categories and click Select. (Click Select Message Category again to re-open the dialog to change your selection.)
- Click Select Login and in the dialog, select a user login and click Select. (Click Select Login again to re-open the dialog to change your selection.)
- Click Save.
The change should be reflected in the Asset Ownership History list.
