This article...
- Details how to split a Target Group into equal, non-overlapping segments.
- Describes how to create a new random segment of a Target Group.
- Explains that split Target Groups and random segment Target Groups do not automatically update if the original group changes.
- Notes that the system guarantees that email addresses are unique within each segment to avoid duplication.
- Discusses the default naming conventions, and the behaviors if segment names already exist.
Access your Target Groups
To access your Target Groups:
- Access the Admin interface.
- Navigate to Contacts > Groups.
Split
Splitting divides an existing Target Group into two to five equal segments.
EXAMPLE: If a Target Group has 10,000 contacts and is split it into four segments, four new Target Groups, each with 2,500 contacts, are created.
Notes
- New Target Groups that are created via this method default to being Interest Target Groups, irrespective of the Type of the "parent" group.
- This cannot be changed but other properties of the group can be managed.
- The names of the new Target Groups are
- the original Target Group name appended with the text - Segment X
- where X is the segment count (1 – 5).
- If the new Target Group name already exists:
- and the group is "in use" (e.g., part of a compound; in a message or campaign), an error displays.
- but the group is not "in use," it is overwritten.
- When you split a group, the system ensures that there are no duplicate email addresses. While the numbers might not sync exactly with the "parent" Target Group, this guarantees that an email address exists exclusively in one segment.
- Split Target Groups are independent of their "parent" Target Group. If the "parent" Target Group changes, the split group is not affected.
Split a Target Group
- Hover on the menu icon for a Target Group and select Split.
- On the popup, click the dropdown and select the number of segments to create.
- Click Split Target Group to divide the existing Target Group into the number of segments chosen.
The list refreshes and displays the new groups under the "parent" (e.g., Mobile Email Recipients - Segment 1).
- Hover on the menu icon of a new group and select Edit to manage the group's name, folder, and/or description.
Random Segment
Random segmenting creates a new Target Group by randomly selecting contacts from an existing Target Group. The new Target Group contains a percentage of the "parent" Target Group's contacts; this percentage is selected by the Admin who is performing the segmentation, and can be between 5% and 95%.
Notes
- New Target Groups that are created via this method default to being Interest Target Groups, irrespective of the Type of the "parent" group.
- This cannot be changed but other properties of the group can be managed.
- The name of the new Target Group is
- the original Target Group name appended with the text Random X% segment
- where X is the selected segmentation percentage.
- If the new Target Group name already exists:
- and the group is "in use" (e.g., part of a compound; in a message or campaign), an error displays.
- but the group is not "in use," it is overwritten.
- When you create a random segment, the system ensures that there are no duplicate email addresses. While the numbers might not sync exactly with the "parent" Target Group, this guarantees that an email address exists exclusively in one segment.
- Random segment Target Groups are independent of their "parent" Target Group. If the "parent" Target Group changes, the random segment group is not affected.
Create and manage a random segment
- Hover on the menu icon for a Target Group (e.g., Mobile Email Recipients) and select Random Segment.
- On the popup, click the dropdown and select a percentage (e.g., 15%) of contacts.
- Click Create Random Segment to create the new Target Group.
The list refreshes and displays the new group under its "parent" (e.g., Mobile Email Recipients - Random 15% segment).
- Hover on the menu icon of the new group and select Edit to manage the group's name, folder, and/or description.
