The Global Settings page for Smart Campaigns is where you establish the following default information used across all Smart Campaign emails:
- from and reply to email addresses,
- your company's mailing address,
- global unsubscribe and preference-management links,
- a logo,
- and the global send time and scheduling for when Smart Campaign emails are sent.
Before you can activate or use Smart Campaigns, you must complete the Global Settings page. This ensures compliance (e.g., CAN-SPAM) and consistent branding across all of your Smart Campaigns.
Access Global Settings
- Access the Admin Interface in your Higher Logic Thrive Marketing Professional account.
- Navigate to Campaigns > Smart Campaigns > Global Settings.
This page's settings are grouped into six tabs:
- Inbox Details
- Unsubscribe
- Address
- Logo
- Scheduling
- AI Writing
Each tab is discussed below.
Inbox Details
NOTE: Changes to these settings apply to all campaigns, including those that have been edited or activated.
In this section, provide the from name, from email address, and reply to email address that will serve as the default addresses for all of your Smart Campaigns. If needed, these defaults can be overridden for individual campaigns on their respective details pages, if specific campaigns require unique addresses.
- (Friendly) From Name - The display name that appears as the default sender (e.g., “Joanna”).
- From Email Address - The default sender email address for all Smart Campaign messages (e.g., info@higherlogic.com).
- Reply to Email Address - The default email address where responses should be sent (e.g., replyto@higherlogic.com).
Unsubscribe
NOTE: Changes to these settings apply to all campaigns, including those that have been edited or activated.
All emails must give recipients a way to globally unsubscribe from your organization's email messages. Smart Campaign emails also let members manage the preference that controls whether they receive future Smart Campaign messages.
On the Unsubscribe tab, you can control two parts of your member's unsubscribe experience:
- In the Where should members Unsubscribe area, you control where members go to globally unsubscribe from all future email messages from your Thrive Marketing Professional account:
- Choose Landing page to power your global unsubscribes via active landing pages pulled from your Landing Pages admin page in Thrive Marketing Professional.
- Choose External link to direct members to a page outside your Thrive Marketing Professional account. Use this when your organization manages unsubscribe requests through another website or system.
- In the Where should members Manage Preferences area, you control where members go to manage their email preferences:
- Choose Email Preferences page in the community to send members to their Thrive Community profile's Email Preferences page.
- Choose Selected landing page to let members manage their preferences on one of your Thrive Marketing Professional Landing Pages by using an active Message Category.
- Select an existing active Message Category, or create and activate a Message Category dedicated to Smart Campaigns first.
- Then add that category to the selected Landing Page so members can opt out of future Smart Campaign messages.
NOTE: Smart Campaigns are limited to customers of Higher Logic Thrive Platform (a combination of Online Community and Thrive Marketing Professional) and customers that have added Thrive Communications to their Online Community.
These campaigns are specifically designed for organizations who want to target their Online Community members using a streamlined alternative to traditional campaigns. With this context in mind, it's important to note that users who globally unsubscribe through a Smart Campaign email are only unsubscribed in Thrive Marketing Professional; they will not be unsubscribed in their Online Community.
Which options should you choose?
The needs and configuration of your account will determine which combination of these options works best for your organization. Let's learn more about these options to help you understand the best path for you.
Landing Page + Email Preferences page in the community
Choose this combination when you want to keep the global unsubscribe experience in Thrive Marketing Professional (via the Landing Page), while using the member’s existing Online Community profile to opt out of Smart Campaign emails.
- The Landing Page option sends the global unsubscribe link (see image below) to an active Thrive Marketing Professional Landing Page. You can use your default Landing Page or select another active page that fits your organization’s branding and messaging.
- The Email Preferences page in the community option sends members to their Online Community profile, where they can turn off the Community Emails category to opt out of future Smart Campaign messages. Keep the following in mind regarding the Community Emails option in Online Community. Toggling it off means:
- users will no longer receive Smart Campaign messages but will still receive one-off messages sent from Message Designer and other campaign messages generated from Campaign Designer;
- users will no longer receive other notifications in their Online Community associated with the Community Emails category of notifications (e.g., Automation Rule emails).
Email Example:
With this configuration, a Smart Campaign email gives recipients two options:
- Turn off Community Emails takes the recipient to their from their Online Community profile where they can turn off the Community Emails category to opt out of future Smart Campaign messages.
- Unsubscribe takes the recipient to your selected Landing Page where they can globally unsubscribe from all future emails sent from your Thrive Marketing Professional account.
Landing Page + Message Category
Choose this combination when you want members to manage their global unsubscribe and Smart Campaign opt-out through a Thrive Marketing Professional Landing Page; you'll select a Smart Campaign-related Message Category to add to the Landing Page, allowing members to opt out of future Smart Campaign messages.
- The Landing Page option provides a Thrive Marketing Professional Landing Page that you can brand and customize for the unsubscribe experience.
- The Selected landing page + Message Category option lets you connect the preference experience to a Smart Campaign-related Message Category. On the Landing Page, members can opt out of your Smart Campaign category while remaining subscribed to other categories that are relevant to them.
This is a good choice when your organization already uses Landing Pages and Message Categories, or when you want to reduce full-account unsubscribes by offering a more targeted option. For example, a member could opt out of your Smart Campaign-related Message Category while remaining subscribed to other categories that are still relevant to them.
NOTE: When using this combination, make sure your selected Landing Page is configured to display your chosen Message Category. Only active Message Categories appear in the Global Settings dropdown. If the dropdown is empty, create or activate a category before returning to this page. See Manage Message Categories to learn more.
When a member opts out of the selected Message Category, they become ineligible for future Smart Campaign messages that use this Global Settings configuration. This also prevents them from receiving remaining messages in an active Smart Campaign.
Email example:
With this configuration, a Smart Campaign email gives recipients a single option:
- Manage Email Preferences or Unsubscribe takes them to your selected Landing Page where they can either:
- globally unsubscribe from all future emails from your Thrive Marketing Professional account, or
- pick and choose which Message Categories to opt out from.
External Link + Email Preferences page in the community
Choose this combination when your organization manages global unsubscribes outside Higher Logic, such as through another website or an external preference-management system.
- The External link option sends the global unsubscribe link (see image below) to the URL you provide (typically an external website or preference-management system).
- The Email Preferences page in the community option sends members to their Online Community profile, where they can turn off the Community Emails category to opt out of future Smart Campaign messages.
Keep the following in mind regarding the Community Emails option in Online Community. When a user toggles it off it means:
- they will no longer receive Smart Campaign messages but will still receive one-off messages sent from Message Designer and other campaign messages generated from Campaign Designer;
- they will no longer receive other notifications in their Online Community associated with the Community Emails category of notifications (e.g., Automation Rule emails).
NOTE: The Message Category option is unavailable with External link. If you want your members to be able to opt out of Smart Campaign messages via a Message Category, select Landing Page for the unsubscribe destination instead.
This combination is a good fit when an external system must remain the source of truth for global unsubscribes, but your Smart Campaign audience is governed by your Online Community profiles.
Email example
With this configuration, a Smart Campaign email gives recipients two options:
- Turn off Community Emails allows them to opt out of future Smart Campaign messages via their Community profile.
- unsubscribe takes them to the external website or system you chose, where they can globally unsubscribe from all future emails from your Thrive Marketing Professional account.
Address
NOTE: Changes to these settings apply to all campaigns, including those that have been edited or activated.
Per CAN-SPAM regulations, every email must include your organization’s physical mailing address. The information provided here will display in the footer of all Smart Campaigns emails.
In this section, you can provide the following address information for your company:
- Company Name
- Street Address
- Address Line 2 (optional)
- City

- Recommended image formats: JPG and PNG.

Scheduling
NOTE: These scheduling settings apply to all active campaigns.
On the Scheduling tab, you can configure global send time and scheduling to precisely control when Smart Campaign emails are sent across your organization. These settings allow you to deliver only on selected business days and at preferred hours to enhance engagement, member experience, and brand image.
NOTE: These scheduling settings apply to ALL of your Smart Campaign emails; there is no way to set a different schedule for an individual campaign.
Configure the following options to set your preferred delivery schedule:
- Send Time - Click the clock icon and select your desired send time (options are in increments of 15 minutes).
- Days of the Week - Click the dropdown to view a list of each day of the week; check and uncheck the boxes to set which days emails can be sent.
- Timezone - Click the dropdown and select your default regional preference.
When a contact qualifies to receive a campaign email, the system ensures emails are sent according to these global day and time constraints, with proper timezone conversions for localized accuracy.
AI Writing
NOTE: Changes to these settings apply only to campaigns that have not been edited (changes to either the subject line or body) or are not currently active.
On the AI Writing tab, you can define your organization's communication preferences (reading level, tone, and audience) so that AI-generated content aligns with your brand voice and better resonates with your target audience.
Properly configuring these AI settings means AI generated content will better reflect your organization's established tone and writing style so that you:
- spend less time editing content and
- maintain consistent brand messaging across campaigns.
NOTE: These AI preferences apply to all Smart Campaigns; you cannot employ specific preferences for individual campaigns.
Configure the following options to set your preferred AI writing style:
-
Reading Level - Set the desired complexity of Smart Campaign email content:
-
Grade 1-5 (simple language for new readers)
(Default) Grade 6-8 (accessible for general audiences)
-
Grade 9-12 (moderate vocabulary and formality)
12+ (expert readers or academic content)
-
- Tone of Voice - This is a free-form text field where you can enter your preferred tone (e.g., Professional, Casual, Friendly, etc.). This customizes the AI’s writing style for all campaign emails. The default tone is professional.
- Audience - This is a free-form text field where you can describe your typical audience (e.g., “members of National Dog Walkers Association”). This context helps the AI tailor content that resonates with your member base.
