This article offers a high-level look at Web Tracking in Thrive Marketing Enterprise.
Web tracking is a tool that enables you to insert code into your website so that your organization can track how users access and use your website. You can also use it to send targeted emails to your users based on their website activity.
NOTE: This is not enabled by default in Thrive Marketing Enterprise accounts. To request that it be enabled in your account, create a case.
How it works
Upon request, Higher Logic will provide a custom snippet of code that has to be inserted in a header or footer on your website so that all page visits and their duration can be tracked.
WARNING: It is important that this code gets correctly inserted by a web administrator with the appropriate permissions. If you don't have the knowledge or permissions to complete this task, request assistance.
NOTE: Web tracking is very similar to Google Analytics. If you're already using Google Analytics, the Thrive Marketing Enterprise web tracking code will not conflict with it.
When a user clicks a hyperlink that has web tracking enabled, a first-class cookie is stored in their web browser. This cookie then communicates with Thrive Marketing Enterprise to tracking the user's web activity in their Thrive Marketing Enterprise record. Whether the user accesses your website directly or via a hyperlink in a Thrive Marketing Enterprise-based message, the user's activity on your website will be tracked.
Known & Anonymous users
Thrive Marketing Enterprise tracks two types of users: known and anonymous.
Known users
Known users are people who have responded to a Thrive Marketing Enterprise campaign and have received a browser cookie from Thrive Marketing Enterprise. They become “known” when they take one of three actions.
- Click a link in any Thrive Marketing Enterprise email (regardless of whether that email was sent from Thrive Marketing Enterprise).
- Submit any Thrive Marketing Enterprise landing page (hosted by Thrive Marketing Enterprise or hosted on your site).
- Submit a form on your site that uses the web tracking code.
Anonymous users
Anonymous users are are people who accessed your website before responding to a Thrive Marketing Enterprise campaign. Thrive Marketing Enterprise still gives these visitors a cookie but cannot identify them until they do any of three actions listed above. Once they do, they become a Known user and Thrive Marketing Enterprise can associate past web visits to that user.
