If your interface is different, view the New Admin Experience version of this article.
In this article, you'll learn how to manually save your changes when building a template and publish your template when it's ready.
Save your work
Just like when you're crafting a message, the Message Editor automatically saves every action you perform as you're working on a template. This generally makes manually saving unnecessary. However, to ensure you never lose your work, you can manually save your progress as you work.
NOTE: If you update a Live template, your changes will be reflected only after it is published. Also, existing messages that were built using the template will retain their original design; they will not be updated with your recent changes.
To do so, just select Save Changes from the Settings menu.
Publish a template
The great thing about templates is you (and others with the appropriate permissions) can work to finalize them before making them available for others to use.
When a template is created, it's in a Working state and will be available for use only after it's published. At this point, it will have a Live state. Editing a template will automatically set it to a Working state, allowing you to make any necessary updates behind the scenes before publishing it to make it Live again.
How to publish
You can publish a template from two locations.
- While editing a template, you can select Publish from the Settings menu.
- On the Manage Templates page, accessed by navigating to Messages > Message Assets > Templates, select the template and click Publish.
Transactional Messages & Unsubscribe links
In accordance with several international laws that are designed to protect personal rights of privacy (see CAN-SPAM act, Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL), and GDPR Compliance), commercial emails must contain an Unsubscribe link to give contacts the option to remove themselves from additional mailings. You cannot publish a standard (non-transactional) message template unless it contains an Unsubscribe link. See Unsubscribe Options to learn how to add an Unsubscribe link to a template.
Unsubscribe links are not required for transactional messages, such as an email-based receipt for a business transaction. See Transactional Templates & Messages to learn more about these types of messages.
