This article describes the Items that you can add from the flyout menu in Landing Page Designer. Items are the design blocks that you use to build a Landing Page, and each Item has a specific purpose.
TIP: Click an Item type name under In this article... on the right of this page to jump to Item-specific information.
The Items that you can add to a Landing Page are detailed in this article with the following exceptions.
- Personal Info - see Personal Info Profile Fields
- Demographics - see Demographic Category Profile Fields
- Interests - see Interests Profile Fields
Add Items to a Landing Page
With the Items flyout panel open, simply click an Item to add it to the design canvas.
You can add multiple instances of some Items to a Landing Page. The following Items are single-use and; when you add them to the canvas, they no longer display in the Items panel. However, if you delete one of these Items from the canvas, it re-appears in the panel and can be re-added as a new Item.
Manage your Items
TIP: You can add guidelines to the design canvas to more easily align your Items; see Design-Grid Guidelines for Landing Pages.
As you add Items to the design canvas, you can manage them (e.g., move, delete, resize) to customize your Landing Page. The following table describes the options and how they function.
- These icons appear when you hover on an Item.
- In some cases, they appear within an Item to allow more granular configuration.
Icon | Function |
---|---|
Click the red X to delete the Item; it becomes available again in the Items flyout panel | |
Click the blue gear icon to access the Item's Properties dialog; the properties options vary by, and are unique to, the current Item | |
Click and hold the green four-arrow icon, then move the Item (up, down, left, right) to a different location | |
Click and hold the two-headed arrow icon to adjust the width or the height of the box; click the resizer in the lower right to simultaneously adjust the width and height | |
Click the blue 4-bar icon to add a Description field (this option is unique to Message Categories Checkbox); click again to remove the field |
TIP: You can also click and drag to select multiple Items and then use one of the selected Item's green four-arrow icon to simultaneously move all the selected Items. This makes it easy to relocate a "group" that you've created instead of having to move and reposition them individually.
As you work...
As you create and/or edit a Landing Page, you should periodically:
- click Save to preserve your changes, and
- preview the mobile version (if you're publishing one).
Accent Box
An Accent Box does not have a "function" in the same way that the other Items do. It is strictly a design element and can be used to:
- distinguish the different sections of your Landing Page,
- visually group similar/related content, and
- highlight the more important sections.
Accent Boxes automatically display behind other items.

- an Unsubscribe Checkbox item to a Landing Page that has a Captcha item.
Email Format Checkbox
This Item gives users the option to indicate that they want to receive only text-based messages.
NOTE: Some email systems block HTML in email messages. This gives users on those systems the ability to better ensure that they receive your email message and that those messages display properly in their email clients.
You can click right on the text to make changes to it.
You can position the Item in a preferred location to increase its impact. (The image below shows it added under an Email field, where it naturally fits and where users are more likely to see it.)

As shown in the image above, you can set an image to function as a banner on a Landing Page. When you do:
- The image will extend to the horizontal edges of the layout area.
- The size of the layout area is not affected by the size of the image.
- If the layout area is re-sized, the image is proportionally re-sized; it retains its (height-to-width) aspect ratio.
TIP: Whenever an image's dimensions are changed, other Items on the page might be unexpectedly repositioned. Be sure to check this and make any necessary adjustments.
Message Categories Checkbox
Add this to the designer to make it easier for your Contacts to self-manage their message preferences right on the Landing Page.
By default, they are eligible to receive all messages from all Message Categories. They can uncheck a Message Category's check box (e.g., Weekly Updates) to opt out of receiving messages from that category.
Description formatting
There is a formatting option (in the Checkbox Fields section of the Style flyout panel) that is dedicated to the Message Categories item. You can use this option to uniquely format the Description field that can be added to each Message Category that is listed on the Landing Page.
- The option is shown below; an example is shown later in this section.
Manage the list of Message Categories
By default, the Item is populated with all of your active Message Categories when it's added to the design canvas. You can individually manage the Message Categories within the box.

- The Message Categories have been re-arranged.
- A description has been added to a Message Category and the specified formatting applied.

Text
Text items are how you add blocks of text to a Landing Page. The text can be informational, instructional, or whatever is appropriate for your Landing Page (e.g., what information you want to convey or what information you want to gather).
In the following image, the headline and action prompt are created via Text items.
Format the text
When you select text in a Text item, several options display above that text. You can select text (a word, several words, a sentence, a paragraph, or all text) and apply a number of styles and formatting, as shown below.
Formatting notes
- Click the hashtag icon (#) to add a link to selected text. Specify the full URL in the field and click the checkmark icon. (Remove a link by using these steps but clicking the X.)
- When a style or formatting is applied, the applicable menu option lightens (note the lighter color for the B and the bullet in the image above).
- To remove a style or formatting, select the text and click the option again in the menu.
- The default text appearance is defined in the Font and Paragraph & Bullet Text Styling sections of the Style flyout menu (see Style Your Landing Pages).

Unsubscribe Checkbox
This Item gives your subscribers an easy to unsubscribe from (i.e., opt out of) all of your mailings.
This builds on the Message Categories Checkbox item by removing the need to cherry-pick each Message Category.
IMPORTANT: Most countries have data- and privacy-protection laws that include a requirement for users to have a clear and well-defined method by which to unsubscribe from unwanted messages. This Item makes it easy for you to meet that requirement.
Unsubscribe notes
When you use this Item on a Higher Logic Thrive Marketing Professional (Thrive Marketing Professional) Landing Page, it's important that you're aware of the following points.
NOTE: The unsubscribe checkbox will automatically be hidden from "unknown" users who visit the Landing Page. For your account's Landing Pages, an "unknown" user is someone for whom there is no email address in your Thrive Marketing Professional account.
- When a subscriber checks this box on a live Landing Page, all other fields on the page are automatically disabled.
- When a subscriber submits the Landing Page:
- the email address that is associated with the user in Thrive Marketing Professional is unsubscribed;
- the subscriber is sent a message indicating they've been unsubscribed; and
- the subscriber record in Thrive Marketing Professional remains intact.
Customization and properties
Customize the Item using the options described in Manage your Items, above.
Click the blue gear icon to manage and save the following properties.

Captcha notes
You cannot add:
- a Captcha item to a Landing Page that has an Unsubscribe Checkbox item.
- an Unsubscribe Checkbox item to a Landing Page that has a Captcha item.
Unsubscribe reasons
A key item to add to an unsubscribe form is an Unsubscribe Reason. By creating a set of options and/or text fields on your form, you can get a better understanding of why your subscribers are leaving.
Once you've entered your unsubscribe items, you can stylize the rest of your form..
There are two types of unsubscribe Items you can add to your Landing Pages:
Unsubscribe options
These are radio buttons you can add to give subscribers a variety of reasons to indicate why they're unsubscribing.
To add one, click Unsubscribe Option in the Items menu. Repeat this step to create additional options. You can freely edit the size and text of these Items to suit your needs.
Unsubscribe Text Area
These give your subscribers an opportunity to explain why they've unsubscribed.
To add one, click Unsubscribe Text Area in the Items menu.
Video
You can embed one or more YouTube videos on a Landing Page, and you can set a video to auto-play when the page is accessed.
- When you select Video from the Items flyout, input just the unique ID of the video; inputting other parts of the URL is not necessary and will cause the link to be invalid.
- Click Add To Page.
The Video item displays as a placeholder in the designer.
Video notes
- You can embed multiple videos, but only one of them can be set to auto-play, the others have to be manually started.
- You cannot play the video in the designer. Save the Landing Page and then test it to ensure the video plays as expected.
- When you resize a Video item, by default, the width and height always resize together in order to retain the aspect ratio of the video player.
