In this article, you'll learn how to take advantage of RSS feeds in Higher Logic Thrive Marketing Professional (Thrive Marketing Professional). You'll learn how to perform each of the steps necessary to insert RSS feeds into your mailings.
Step 1 - Create an RSS Feed source
If you plan to load articles onto your website, you might want to consider using RSS feeds to bring these same articles into your mailings. RSS feeds allow you to place and format outside web content in your mailing. This easy-to-use feature is very beneficial, especially if you frequently update your website content.
- Navigate to Mailings > Story Layouts to get to the HTML editor.
- Click Create.
- Click the RSS Feed button on the toolbar.
- Enter a feed Name and URL.
- Click Save.
- To add another RSS Feed, click Add and repeat the steps above.
Step 2 - Create Story layouts for RSS Feeds
After you've created the RSS feed in Thrive Marketing Professional, create an RSS feed story layout.
- Navigate to Mailings > Options > Story Layouts.
- Click Create.
- Click the Type menu and select RSS Feed.
- Create an initial story layout using the desired table structure needed, and click the Content Codes icon in the toolbar to insert the necessary content codes.
- Select a code from the RSS Tags section.
The story layout now contains the RSS content codes; this tells the RSS feed where to place your desired content or information.
Step 3 - Insert an RSS Feed URL
Once you've built your RSS story layout, you can now insert it into a mailing.
- Navigate to a story in a mailing.
- Click the RSS Feeds button.
- Click the Feed source menu to select a source.
- Check the box next to the story, or stories, you want to insert.
- Click Select Layout.
- Click the Story Layout menu to select the layout to use.
- Click Insert.
The RSS content, wrapped in the selected story layout, is inserted in the story.
Locate an RSS Feed URL
RSS feeds allow you to pull content from outside sources to be placed into a mailing. RSS feeds contain XML data, and must be pulled from a source that has the RSS capability. This is typically indicated by a signal icon on the website:
Let's look at how to locate the RSS Feed URL for later use.
NOTE: By inserting an RSS feed in your mailing, you're effectively adding a "snapshot" in time: It is NOT dynamic and does not update in real time.
- Navigate to the website or blog where you wish to pull content.
- Once you find the RSS signal icon, click it to retrieve the URL.
- This is the URL that you'll use when creating an RSS feed in your mailing.
